چکیده

Markov chain Monte Carlo methods can be used to approximate the intractable normalizing constants that arise in likelihood calculations for many exponential family random graph models for networks. However, in practice, the resulting approximations degrade as parameter values move away from the value used to define the Markov chain. Here, we introduce a method of moving toward a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) from an arbitrary starting parameter value in a series of steps based on alternating between the canonical exponential family parameterization and the mean-value parameterization. This technique enables us to find an approximate MLE in many cases where this was previously not possible. We illustrate these methods on a transcriptional regulation network for E. Coli, an example where previous attempts to approximate an MLE had failed. These methods are implemented in the publicly available ergm package for R, and computer code to duplicate the results of this paper is included in the Supplementary Materials.

Inference in Curved Exponential Family Models for Networks

Network data arise in a wide variety of applications. Although descriptive statistics for networks abound in the literature, the science of fitting statistical models to complex network data is still in its infancy. The models considered in this article are based on exponential families; therefore, we refer to them as exponential random graph models (ERGMs). Although ERGMs are easy to postulate...

Steplength Thresholds for Invariance Preserving of Discretization Methods of Dynamical Systems on a Polyhedron

Steplength thresholds for invariance preserving of three types of discretization methods on a polyhedron are considered. For Taylor approximation type discretization methods we prove that a valid steplength threshold can be obtained by finding the first positive zeros of a finite number of polynomial functions. Further, a simple and efficient algorithm is proposed to numerically compute the ste...

Auxiliary Parameter MCMC for Exponential Random Graph Models

Exponential random graph models (ERGMs) are a well-established family of statistical models for analyzing social networks. Computational complexity has so far limited the appeal of ERGMs for the analysis of large social networks. Efficient computational methods are highly desirable in order to extend the empirical scope of ERGMs. In this paper we report results of a research project on the deve...

A Simulation Study Comparing Epidemic Dynamics on Exponential Random Graph and Edge-Triangle Configuration Type Contact Network Models

We compare two broad types of empirically grounded random network models in terms of their abilities to capture both network features and simulated Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) epidemic dynamics. The types of network models are exponential random graph models (ERGMs) and extensions of the configuration model. We use three kinds of empirical contact networks, chosen to provide both varie...

On some steplength approaches for proximal algorithms

We discuss a number of novel steplength selection schemes for proximal-based convex optimization algorithms. In particular, we consider the problem where the Lipschitz constant of the gradient of the smooth part of the objective function is unknown. We generalize two optimization algorithms of Khobotov type and prove convergence. We also take into account possible inaccurate computation of the ...
